The angle grinder is one of the most dangerous power tools out there, and if you are planning on handling one of them you really need to know what you are doing. The necessity of the proper safety gear is pretty obvious and anyone that is even thinking of looking at one of these tools should already have put on all of the protective equipment. Another very important aspect of the angle grinder is the cutting disk and the applications that different discs can have when used on certain materials.

While there are many different types, the first thing that most people think of when an angle grinder cutting disc is mentioned is a diamond tipped disc. Thee are generally the most durable type that you can find and are meant to be used on much harder materials that the other discs can’t handle. An important distinction that you need to look out for when buying these discs is whether they are wet cut or dry cut. Regardless of the type they will still cut virtually anything in half, but it will change whether or not they will need to be used with or without water.

Probably the most commonly used type of angle grinder cutting disk is the aluminium oxide variety. While they lose out to the diamond tipped variety in terms of strength, they are pretty much even when it comes to the number of different materials that they can handle thanks to the flexibility of these discs. There are many different types of aluminium oxide abrasives, and each of them can be specially blended for a particular grinding job.

Finally, there is the silicon carbine variety of cutting disk, which is undeniably meant to tackle much softer types of materials than the previous two, but while this may seem like a disadvantage, it is actually one of it’s benefits. The reasoning here is simple, if your intention is to handle some tougher materials, then either of the other two types of discs can get the job done, but there is no substitute for the silicon carbine when it comes to the softer materials you might be working with.

There are also other cutting discs that you can pick from that might suit a certain project better than the above mentioned ones. However these are the basic three that can handle virtually anything aside from the really specific tasks that might need a bit more of a specialized disc.
